Meet Alabama’s Most Beatable Bigot:

Susan DuBose

Susan DuBose is a first-term Republican state representative from Alabama House District 45, a suburban seat that includes parts of Shelby, Jefferson, and St. Clair Counties. Since taking office in 2022, DuBose has built a reputation as one of the most extreme anti-LGBTQ+ lawmakers in the state

She authored Alabama’s transgender athlete ban for college students, sponsored legislation to forcibly out trans kids, and has championed criminal penalties for librarians who shelve LGBTQ+ books. She also introduced a gender-erasure bill that legally defines sex solely by anatomy at birth, effectively eliminating legal recognition for transgender people in Alabama.

While DuBose has sailed through her first term with little opposition, the tides are shifting. Her district includes rapidly diversifying suburbs where voters have shown signs of fatigue with far-right culture wars. DuBose’s campaign for re-election is expected to begin in 2025—and Agenda PAC will be there when she does.

Legislative Record

  1. HB 261 (2023): DuBose was the lead sponsor of Alabama’s law banning transgender athletes from participating in college sports consistent with their gender identity. The law addressed virtually no documented cases but made Alabama the first state to pass such a ban at the collegiate level.

  2. “What is a Woman Act” (2025): She introduced a bill to rigidly define gender in state law based on reproductive anatomy at birth. The bill seeks to invalidate legal recognition of transgender people in schools, prisons, healthcare, and beyond.

  3. HB 246 (2025): DuBose supported a bill that would require school staff to notify parents if a student requests a pronoun change, effectively mandating the forced outing of transgender students. She also pushed for an amendment making parental permission a requirement for any deviation from birth-assigned pronouns.

  4. HB 4 (2025): DuBose co-sponsored legislation that would criminalize librarians and teachers for distributing LGBTQ-inclusive literature deemed “harmful to minors.” The bill imposes fines and potential jail time, and its vague language targets books with gender or sexual content—even in public libraries.

  5. Local Library Board Takeover: DuBose introduced a local bill to eliminate North Shelby’s elected library board, replacing it with an appointed one after public complaints over LGBTQ book displays. Her legislation stripped voters of their right to elect library trustees.

Susan DuBose is a culture warrior legislating from the far-right fringe.

She’s gone out of her way to:

  • target LGBTQ+ students,

  • criminalize librarians,

  • and force Alabama into costly legal battles over unconstitutional laws.

She calls it “protecting children.” Voters are starting to call it what it is—discrimination.

Her record is extreme. Her district is shifting. Her allies are being unseated across the South. And her re-election campaign is about to begin.

Agenda PAC is ready.

She is Alabama’s top 50-for-50 target.
